Regulators Roll Out NGN in 25 Minutes
19th June 2009
And so it came to pass that BWCS hosted the No-Nonsense Guide to NGNs and NGAs at the recent IIR conference in Berlin (see previous entry). We were offering regulators and those in the regulatory function of telcos the chance to find out how all this new telecoms technology works. As well presentations from BWCS people, we had a couple guests with us for the day: Phil Holmes, formerly design guru for BT's 21CN, and Peter Weik, IMS specialist with the FraunhoferInstitute for Open Communication Systems. We set our attendees a formidable challenge - divide into two teams and build an NGN and make VOIP phone calls in 30 minutes. We supplied some routers, IP phones, old school phones, terminal adapters, a couple of softswitches (running on 400 notebooks) and a collection of cables. Considering that none of our attendees had an engineering background, they did exceptionally well. The first call was completed after 25 minutes. A giant leap for mankind, etc, etc. OK, so it wasn't exactly a telco grade network, but it worked, and the delegates had a good time making phone calls to each other.
