Train Communications Systems conferences

BWCS has now produced and hosted two major conferences on WiFi services on trains: Train Communications Systems 2006 and Train Communications Systems 2007. At both events we drew together train operators and suppliers form all over the world. In 2007 a total of 22 different speakers gave their views on the drive to install WiFi on trains for the benefit of customers and staff on trains.

Some of the train operators came to learn, while others gave candid assessments of how far they have made it along the line to installing a full on-board WiFi service. The truth is that despite great progress in this sector and in the face of overwhelming public demand for such services, only a handful of train companies have so far managed to supply customers with an internet connection. Many of the operators that have done so have worked with BWCS in some form.

At the 2007 conference it became clear that major train companies across Europe and the rest of the world are gradually coming to see WiFi on board as a vital new service that they will have to offer in the future. This is not so much for the convenience and enjoyment of their passengers, but also and often more importantly for the savings to the bottom line that on-train, high-speed wireless services can offer.

Train operators these days are more likely to build the business case for WiFi on board by focusing on the other beneficial applications it could bring to the company's fleet: video surveillance, infotainment, passenger number monitoring, voice communications for employees, and train maintenance. The arrival of these new breed of "back office" applications are offering train companies new and dynamic ways to make their services more profitable, more secure, more efficient and even more passenger friendly.
