More Patent Disputes for Nokia...
(20 Jan 2010, BWCS Staff)Following yesterday's news of its continuing spat with Apple, Nokia gained some cheer today from a victory in Britain's High Court. This time, the case was centred on a long-running patent dispute between the Finnish company and IPCom. IPCom owns the 160 mobile patents once developed by Bosch and believes Nokia has been illegally breaching its patents. Nokia said it will now seek to recoup the costs of the action from its German opponent.
A spokesman for the Finns in the UK, Mark Durrant, summed up his company's position "This is an important decision, as it is not possible to infringe an invalid patent," he claimed. "Nokia is pleased with these results, having won all patent infringement cases between Nokia and IPCom that have come to judgment," Durrant added. The two companies have been scrapping it out in a variety of courts over the last three years failing to reach an agreement over the patents and their validity.
For its part, IPCom said it would appeal the ruling and that in any case it believes the ruling will only affect the validity of patents Nokia uses in the UK market. Last month both Nokia and Taiwanese company HTC were allowed to carry on using equipment that contained disputed patents by a court in Germany. A final ruling on the dispute is expected from the European Patent Office later this year.
