Google Puts Two Chinese Phones on Hold
(20 Jan 2010, BWCS Staff)Having threatened to move out of China and close its Chinese language websites, Google is now determined to delay the launch of its new mobile handsets in the country. The search engine giant, which is working hard to increase its presence in the mobile sector, has developed two mobile phones specially tailored for the Chinese market.
The new phones, which were scheduled to be unveiled this week, have been developed in tandem with Samsung and Motorola and reportedly incorporate Google's e-mail and search facilities. They were part of a deal with Chinese mobile operator China Unicom.
So far, Google has refused to say how long it will hold off on the launch. Most analysts believe it will find it hard to add to its roster of products in China following the accusations against the Chinese government that it had been involved in the sophisticated and targeted hacking of e-mail accounts held by Chinese dissidents.
The new handsets use Google's Android operating system and feature its mobile applications like search and Google maps.
