Faster Mobile Speeds for France
(26 Jan 2010, BWCS Staff)French mobile operator Orange is busy upgrading its HSDPA network from the current 7.2Mbps to a more respectable 14.4Mbps. However, the increased speed will only be available in the capital this month. During February and beyond the mobile wing of France Telecom, the former French state operator, will expand the new higher-speed mobile system to other cities including Bordeaux, Lens, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes, Nice, Strasbourg, Toulon and Toulouse. According to Orange, the new, faster mobile networks will allow users to download a 5MB file in three seconds, providing the network is operating at top speed. This is compared to seven seconds which it would have taken previously on the older, slower, HSDPA network.
The French upgrade forms part of the operator's continued push to claim a greater share of the market for mobile data services. The French-owned company recently added UK-based ad sales company Unanimis to its roster. In November 2009 Orange Advertising Network, announced its expansion into the US and South American markets. The move means that the network can now offer advertisers, keen to push their products and services into America, specific site placements, run of network ads and direct response messages in these new markets. Orange Advertising Network also has operations in the UK, Germany and Spain.
Earlier this month, TeliaSonera announced that it had signed up Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Networks to provide the kit it needs for an ambitious roll out of LTE networks across Sweden and Norway. Ericsson told the press that it has been selected as the telco's sole supplier of the common core network equipment and LTE radio access kit. For its part, NSN said that it had inked a two-year deal with TeliaSonera covering the supply of LTE radio equipment, network management systems, and multi-vendor integration and care services.
