Israel Awards WiFi on Trains Contract

(31 Jan 2012, BWCS Staff)

Israel Railways has today announced today that Motorola Solutions has won the recent tender to provide Internet services on board all of its trains. The train company runs eight different main lines across the country and is currently involved in the controversial construction of a high-speed rail link between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

According to the tender terms, by this March a pilot will be in operation at the Tel Aviv Central and Tel Aviv University stations, and on two double-decker trains, with the possibility of extending the pilot to six further trains. The project is due to be completed by October, eventually giving passengers Internet access in all 53 railway stations and in 620 carriages.

The contract is reportedly worth NIS 23 million (US$6.1 million) over ten years, during which time Motorola Solutions will set up, maintain, and operate the WiFi on-board services, which will be free to passengers. The train operator has also announced an application for iPhone and Android that enables passengers to check rail timetables and fares. The new app apparently includes an alarm that will sound when the passenger arrives at the appointed station.

All new and existing Train WiFi services will be discussed at this summer’s WiFi on Trains conference – Train Communication Systems 2012.

There is still one speaking slot and one sponsor opportunity for the Conference which will be held on the 13th and 14th of June.
