Big Cuts in Spanish Mobile Rates on the Cards

(24 Jun 2009, BWCS Staff)

CMT, the Spanish telecoms regulator, is proposing massive cuts of up to 43% in the mobile termination fees currently charged by the country's three main operators. The mobile call termination rate is the fee that mobile network operators charge to connect calls made from other fixed or mobile networks. The watchdog has launched a public consultation on the issue, but it is suggesting that Orange Spain, Telefonica Moviles and Vodafone Spain should face large cuts and newcomer Xfera - operating as Yoigo should reduce its fees by 52%.

However, the CMT is prepared to let the operators trim the fees gradually over the next two years - starting on the 16th of October this year. The final fee for terminating calls to mobile numbers will be euros 0.04 compared to the current rate of euros 0.07 - if the CMT gets its way. Xfera, as a newer entrant, would be granted slightly longer to comply.

The CMT wants the fee reductions to be gradually implemented via price cuts every six months.
