Icomera Catches the Luxury Bus

(24 Jun 2009, BWCS Staff)

On-board WiFi provider Icomera has made what it believes is an important break-through into the US luxury-coach market. Yesterday the Swedish/UK technology company announced that it has signed a deal to provide WiFi connections on 120 coaches owned and operated by Texan company Executive Coach. Based in Houston, Dallas and Austin Executive operates luxury buses across the US.

According to Dave Palmer, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Sales at Icomera, the potential market for such services on chartered buses in the US is huge - "With over 5,000 charter bus companies generating in excess of $2.3 billion in revenues in 2008, this market presents a significant opportunity for Icomera and our Channel Partners."

Executive Coach's charter bus fleet comprises vehicles that can accommodate between forty-five and sixty passengers. The company has already commenced the installation of Moovbox technology and expects the service to be available to passengers this summer.

"We are continually looking at ways we can improve our passenger experience and Wi-Fi is clearly an important addition," said John Zenkovich, Vice President and General Manager at Executive Coach. "We looked at a number of options for delivering Internet connectivity to our fleet, before deciding that the ruggedized Moovbox device and MoovManage remote monitoring fitted our technical requirements perfectly.

The Moovbox M200 Mobile Broadband Gateway acts as a bridge between a vehicle and high-speed cellular data networks including 3G/HSPA, EV-DO and WiMax, providing WiFi access and an Ethernet-based local area network (LAN) for connecting on-board systems such as CCTV and passenger information systems. It also has integrated GPS receiver for real-time automatic vehicle location (AVL) via the web-based MoovManage service.
