WiFi on Underground Gains Support

(30 Jun 2010, BWCS Staff)

London Mayor, Boris Johnson, has thrown his considerable weight behind a new scheme to offer WiFi services to passengers on the London Underground. Johnson has already promised blanket WiFi-coverage of London before the Olympic Games lands there in 2012. Allowing travellers to use their mobiles and laptops on the tube and at stations would help benefit the economy, he claimed yesterday.

Speaking to the press, the Mayor declare himself in favour of technological advances for the underground and added, "I think people do want the facility of looking at their Blackberry, or whatever it happens to be." However, as a renowned talker himself he recognised that not everyone would welcome the arrival of mobile devices on London Underground trains. Bearing this in mind, he suggested that there could be some quiet carriages just as over-ground trains often have.

Only last month the mayor outlined a vision of London where "every lamp-post and every bus stop" would offer wireless internet access.  So far, over half of the councils within London have signed up to Project WiFi, while a similar scheme in the City of London already offers free wireless internet access to all.
