Britain Well Ahead of Europe in WiFi on Trains

(06 Dec 2010, BWCS Staff)

The UK is leading Europe in the race to put WiFi onto trains, according to passenger website mytrainticket.co.uk. A spokesman for the site said that the UK rail network is now “well ahead” in providing WiFi services on-board - compared to the rest of Europe. The ticket website made the claim following yet another WiFi on trains service launch in the UK, this time on trains run by National Express East Anglia (NXEA). The operator is to start offering WiFi connections to all passengers on its London to Norwich and London to Stanstead Airport routes.

In a statement Alistair Lees, managing director of mytrainticket.co.uk, said “On-board WiFi represents a useful additional revenue stream for train companies, which are, after all, commercial operators. Most importantly, though, it is attractive to customers who might otherwise travel by air or car and who can now make use of the journey to catch up on e-mails, do some work or simply browse the internet.” The website’s map of the spread of on-board WiFi shows a slower take-up on the West side of the UK than on the East.

However, many countries across Europe are also in the throes of launching WiFi services, while some such as Sweden, Norway and Switzerland have boasted on-board connectivity for some time now.

Next year, BWCS will once again host train companies from around the world at the annual Train Communications Systems Conference which looks at WiFi services on trains, on-board entertainment services and also at how train companies are increasingly using the train to shore broadband connection to establish cost-saving services worth many millions of pounds.
