T-Mobile Slashes Data Usage

(12 Jan 2011, BWCS Staff)

The UK telecoms watch-dog Ofcom is to investigate moves by the German-owned operator T-Mobile to change its terms of usage policy. The move comes as customers were told that the company plans to cut its current mobile data limits to 500Mb, no matter how much the individual subscriber may be paying for their connection. According to some press reports, this has sparked outrage among T-Mobile users.

According to Ofcom, service providers must give customers one month’s notice if any changes are to be made to the way they are billed or to their terms of use. The regulator believes that some customers may have a case for early and “penalty free” termination of their contracts. Apparently these latest changes came with only three weeks’ notice.

T-Mobile’s move, which is thought to be partly in response to the high number of users accessing and watching videos on their handsets, is bound to spark controversy. It follows the recent decision by rival operator Three to cancel its data caps. Other providers such as O2, which sells the i-Phone, also introduced limits last year. Another reason for the move, apart from the attempt to cut costs at T-Mobile, is that it will bring it into line with its network partner, Orange.
