(11 Feb 2011, BWCS Staff)Swedish-based supplier of on-board WiFi systems to trains and buses, Icomera, has announced a new contract in Portugal. The company has been signed up to provide passenger WiFi access on over 100 Rede Nacional de Expressos buses. The deal will see M200 Series Moovbox devices being provided by Icomera as part of the solution delivered from Smartmove.
A successful pilot project in Portugal has resulted from a partnership between Smartmove and ZON Empresas, the largest TV and telecoms operator in Portugal. The Smartmove offering consists of a system focused on passenger entertainment integrating three different systems: Free Internet Access, Digital Signage and GPS Tracking.
According to Bruno Nini, Technical Director of Smartmove, “The solution we have put together for coaches and buses is proving highly successful and being well received. This initial deployment of 100 buses has shown that in only 4 months we have reached to almost 400GB of traffic and more than 2,500 unique regular users measured in all of the 100 buses."
"The deployment of the WiFi and Media solution is proving to be extremely popular with our passengers", said Dr. Carlos Oliveira CEO of Rede Nacional de Expressos. "We have made huge investments in our 'Comfort fleet' and in deploying this solution we aimed to improve the passenger travel experience. Feedback from our customers shows that we have achieved this."
Icomera will be one of the companies presenting at this summer’s WiFi on trains conference – Train Communication Systems 2011, where BWCS will once again host train companies from around the world. The conference will look at WiFi services on trains, on-board entertainment services and also at how train companies are increasingly using the train to shore broadband connection to establish cost-saving services worth many millions of pounds.
