Icomera WiFi Solution on ICE – in Germany

(29 Apr 2016, BWCS Staff)

German train operator Deutsch Bahn has chosen Icomera to supply on-board Internet connectivity for passengers on its extensive fleet of long distance ICE trains. According to the Swedish-based technology company, the contract covers all 259 ICE trains currently in operation, plus a further 130 which are on order. The ICE trains, which come in four different iterations – the first set being deployed back in 1991, with the latest (ICE TD) being brought into service in 2001-2003, are the flagships of DB’s extensive armada of rolling stock.

The German company reports that work on test trains will begin this summer, with the installation project for the existing fleet set to be completed during the rest of the year. Icomera will deploy its X-Series open application and connectivity platform, supporting passenger WiFi requirements.

Siemens will supply the new ICE 4 trains to DB, with 130 set to join the fleet during 2017.  The new trains will form the backbone of the operator’s future long-distance network. Following this move, DB aims to replace its ICE 1 and ICE 2 vehicles. The ICE 4 will finally be responsible for approximately 70% Deutsche Bahn's interurban transport revenues.

Karl-Johan Holm, President and CEO of Icomera, said: “We are very pleased that, through a rigorous procurement process, Deutsche Bahn has chosen Icomera to provide its on-board passenger WiFi. Our solution will extend the high quality passenger experience that Deutsche Bahn is known for, while also establishing the framework and foundations required for developing a truly interconnected eco-system of on-board services and systems in the future.”

Deutsche Bahn will be one of the main presenters at this year’s WiFi on Trains Conference hosted by BWCS in London on the 8th and 9th of June.

The Conference will examine the expanding market for on-board WiFi services as well as the problems of intermittent mobile coverage, proposed trackside solutions.
