Nomad Delivers Live IP TV to ÖBB Trains – in Time for Traincomms 2016 (… and Regional Football Tournament)

(10 Jun 2016, BWCS Staff)

Live at the annual WiFi on Trains Conference in London yesterday, Nomad Digital, announced the “world’s first” ” terrestrial broadcast TV solution over IP for the rail market. The new service is part of a package of measures introduced by the Newcastle-based tech company which is delivering a fleet-wide passenger WiFi upgrade to ÖBB (the largest Austrian rail operator). In addition to the on-train internet connections, Nomad has introduced a comprehensive passenger portal with multi-media services on 51 ÖBB Railjets.

The UK train connectivity company has been a partner of the Austrian behemoth for the past ten years and has designed, integrated and deployed multiple on-board connected passenger services. These have now been rolled out across ÖBB’s Railjet fleet of 420 Siemens train carriages, which serve Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

However, the stand-out feature is the new partnership with Austrian state broadcaster which has seen Nomad supply “live” terrestrial broadcast TV via an IP connection to a train company for the first time. The launch is timed to coincide, not just with BWCS’ annual get-together of the most important players in this niche market, but also with the current football jamboree which is about to get underway in France.

As part of a suite of enhanced technology solutions, Nomad is also launching its next generation 3500P platform across ÖBB’s Railjet fleet, to enable a fully upgraded connectivity service and integrated media server. This 3500P upgrade provides the integrated passenger connectivity solutions through faster router technology, upgraded access points and new-generation modems, offering a scalable, future-proofed solution and operational application hosting environment.

In addition, Nomad’s connectivity solution supports the launch of ÖBB’s integrated passenger portal, which delivers a full media and infotainment platform with rich content (including live TV in two trains) and a Passenger Information System (PIS).

Nomad and ÖBB are planning to launch a dedicated passenger experience hub, with the objective of developing and delivering innovative applications which will enhance both the passenger and operational experience.

Andrew Taylor, Nomad Digital CEO, said “Delivering live on-board broadcast TV is a real game changer in our industry, and also coincides with the launch of a major international sporting event.”

The expanding market for on-board WiFi services as well as the problems of intermittent mobile coverage, proposed trackside solutions and other issues facing the UK and the rest of the World were comprehensively covered in this year’s WiFi on Trains Conference hosted by BWCS.
