Nomad Jumps On Board With Train Cargo Company

(20 Sep 2016, BWCS Staff)

UK on-train technology company Nomad Digital has been signed up to a five year deal to supply on-board remote condition monitoring systems to DB Cargo, the company formerly known as DB Schenker Rail. The condition monitoring units will be installed across a DB Cargo fleet of 90 locomotives operating internationally, with completion targeted for the end of this year.

According to Nomad, the deal follows on from a successful one-year trial of the technology by DB. The Newcastle-based company said that the ROCM system will provide access to real-time condition and diagnostic-based information across key operational systems for the freight giant.

DB Cargo’s Head of Asset and Technology Strategy, Mathias Thomas, said: “According to our technology and innovation strategy, DB Cargo’s Asset Management and Technology Department will drive digitisation of our rolling stock fleet aiming for an automated asset value chain. Thus until 2020 about 2,000 locomotives will provide data to DB Cargo’s “Asset Intelligence Centre”. Currently about 600 locomotives already deliver technical data from diagnostics systems as well as time series sensor data constantly. This system helps DB Cargo to enhance locomotive availability and fleet operations.”

As part of the agreement, Nomad will not only deliver and install the kit onto the engines but will also work with DB Cargo to develop new systems to handle the train company’s future requirements. The technology to deliver the ROCM tool is provided by Nomad Tech, the joint venture between Nomad Digital and EMEF (the Portuguese rolling stock maintenance company).

In July this year Nomad was signed up by train manufacturer Stadler to supply on-board WiFi kit for Swiss train company SBB’s new EC250 ‘Giruno’ high-speed trains. The Swiss state rail operator will use the new trains on the routes linking Zurich, and nearby cities, to Italy via the soon-to-open Gotthard Base Tunnel.

WiFi on trains and the provision of remote monitoring systems were two of main topics addressed at the recent WiFi on Trains Conference hosted by BWCS in London. There were several new announcements made during the Conference, all of which can be found at www.Traincomms2016.com .
