And Fluidmesh / Cisco Too …

(03 Oct 2016, BWCS Staff)

No sooner had we reported from the airy halls of Innotrans on the growing array of track-side wireless solutions on offer, than Fluidmesh got in touch. The US/Italian technology company, which was also well represented at the Berlin bun-fight, is keen to ensure that its new systems and its new partnership with networking giant Cisco do not get overlooked.

Before Berlin, where it officially announced its tie-up with Cisco and the US giant’s Connected Train solution, Fluidmesh had successfully demonstrated its two new wireless products, aimed squarely at the mass transit market, in a series of track tests with high-speed train operators in northern Italy.

According to Fluidmesh, its new 4500 MOBI and 3500 ENDO track-side radio systems, operating on 5150MHz-5350MHz and 5470MHz-5850 MHz frequency bands can reach speeds of up to 866.6Mbps. They do so by leveraging 80 MHz wide channels and 256 QAM encoding. The company argues that the fact that its radios can be “bolted on” to existing ERTMS and GSM-R infrastructure makes it a very cost-effective solution.

The recent field trials with Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (a Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group company) involved trains travelling at 300kmh and apparently showed that the system works with base stations placed up to 8km apart along the track. Further tests are being carried out with a Trenitalia Frecciarossa ETR500 passenger train.

The problem of how to improve trackside coverage will be one of the main topics addressed at next year’s WiFi on Trains Conference hosted by BWCS in London.
