Delhi Metro to Get Free WiFi at More Stations and in Some Trains by 2020

By the end of this year, commuters using the Delhi Metro will be able to access WiFi at all Metro stations on the Yellow Line and in all trains on the Airport Express Line. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said this week that work is already under way and pointed out that Free WiFi has been available on all Blue Line stations since August 2017 and Airport Express Line stations since 2016.

The Airport Express Line, which will offer on-train passenger Internet access, runs for 22.7km and comprises six stations. Over the past few years ridership figures have risen steadily on the route. By August of last year, it was reported that the service carried an average of 50,000 passengers per day.

The Delhi Metro system consists of are eight colour coded lines. The Yellow Line, which connects Gurgaon in Haryana to Samaypur Badli in north Delhi will be the third to be WiFi enabled. The Blue and Orange (Airport Express) lines already have WiFi (in stations). In 2016, TechnoSatComm won a 10-year licence to fund, build and operate the public WiFi network across the Delhi Metro.

The metro in Delhi is one of the world’s newest and rapidly growing subway systems. It ranks among the top 20 subway systems by ridership with more than 3 million trips daily, growing by 6% every year. Delhi today is the fastest growing city in Asia and India is predicted to be the third largest economy globally by 2030.

Passengers can access the WiFi service on the Metro, called “Oui DMRC Free WiFi”, by entering a mobile number and then typing in the auto-generated One Time Password. According to Delhi Metro Rail Corporation WiFi is available at speeds of up to 50Mbps.
