Denmark On-Track to Offer WiFi on All Inter-City and Regional Trains

(09 Jul 2019, BWCS Staff)

Danish State Railways (DSB) said this week that it will provide on-train WiFi on its entire fleet of 250 trains by the end of this year. It currently offers WiFi in some 73% of its carriages.

Alstom Transport UK Ltd and Nomad Digital have a six-year agreement in place to supply, design, deliver and maintain on-board passenger WiFi to the state-owned national train operator. The contract was signed in September 2018.

The Danish government has arguably been one of the leading lights in the on-board passenger WiFi sector. In 2016, after years of passenger dissatisfaction with slow and intermittent WiFi service on board its trains, the Copenhagen administration announced plans to pour DKKr100 million (€13.4 million) into improving on-train connectivity. In a break-through scheme, the money is being used to expand rail administrator Banedanmark’s national network of radio-masts at up to 75 track-side locations.

The project to improve internet coverage on the trains in Denmark involved close collaboration between DSB, Arriva, Banedanmark, Telia, TDC Group, Telenor and the telecommunications company "3" and a team from BWCS.

Jürgen Müller, DSB’s executive vice president of strategy and rolling stock said of the Nomad agreement, “DSB is looking forward to offering our customers a new improved free and easy access to the internet in our regional and intercity fleet. We have chosen an end-to end solution from Nomad Digital leaving Nomad Digital with the responsibility to constantly advise DSB on how the customers are secured on a highly stable and intelligent WiFi service.”

Nomad is providing a multi-mobile network operating WiFi solution. The solution offers access to the available internet capacity, while remaining affordable and cost-effective for DSB. The goal is to offer a free WiFi solution that offers high speed connection, enabling use of e-mail and internet browsing.

The WiFi solution is built on Nomad’s latest router technology platform, the R5001. It uses the new Nomad Connect software and technology for a simple and smart user experience.

Reece Donovan, Nomad’s CEO, said, “We’re really looking forward to being able to roll this out across the DSB fleets over the next six years. Our vision at Nomad is ‘connecting everything’ with the aim to deliver an intelligent journey for everyone. Our WiFi and internet solutions are a key part of this and will achieve maximum passenger experience for DSB.”
