Nomad Wins Major Contract to Supply WiFi on Danish/Swedish Öresund Trains

(18 Mar 2020, BWCS Staff)

Nomad Digital has won a large order to supply its WiFi on-board solution to trains running on the Danish-Swedish Öresund routes. According to the UK supplier, the “multi-million pound” deal will see it kit out 111 trains, increasing its share of the market in both Denmark and Sweden.

The Newcastle-based company is to supply, design and deliver a complete on-train Passenger WiFi solution and provide maintenance and operation services. Nomad Digital’s new contract builds on its existing relationship with DSB, the Danish national train operator. At the same time, it says it is gaining new business from the Swedish owners of the Öresund train units.

The trains run across the Öresund Bridge between Helsingør and Copenhagen in Denmark, and Malmö and Lund in southern Sweden. On the Danish side, the service stops frequently, while across the bridge in Sweden it becomes more of a long-distance service running to cities such as Gothenburg, Kalmar and Karlskrona and competing with SJ Trains on these routes.

The new WiFi on trains contract will be valid for four years and Nomad says the delivery programme is already underway with the target of having the entire fleet kitted out by the end of this year. The WiFi solution is built on Nomad’s latest R5001 router technology platform using the company’s Connect software.

Michael Beckmann, from DSB – part-owners of the Öresund trains commented, “We are looking forward to offering our passengers a state-of-the art WiFi solution. The solution to be rolled out on the Öresund train fleet, is based on the technology already in use across DSB’s regional and long-distance fleet operating in Denmark.”

Meanwhile Gerald von Pok, Nomad’s UK and EMEA Director of Sales said, “We are very excited to be given this opportunity to build on our existing activity with DSB as well as develop new relationships with the OTU option holders to establish a significant footprint for Nomad WiFi solutions in Sweden.”

The roll out of track-side networks, on-train WiFi services, the growing market for passenger WiFi and on-board entertainment will be the main subjects of BWCS’s WiFi on Trains Conference later this year.
