Nomad Launches New On-Train Portal

(09 Feb 2021, BWCS Staff)

Newcastle-based on-train WiFi supplier, Nomad Digital, has launched a new on-demand media portal. The Engage Portal, which Nomad says is already in use, delivers on-demand, managed-content directly to the passenger’s device.

The launch allows Nomad to offer train operator customers a platform for new services that can be distributed to hundreds of trains, in real-time, maximising existing investments.

According to Xavier Champaud, Nomad Digital’s Managing Director, “With our new product, Engage Portal, Nomad has combined an extensive offering that will benefit all passengers and will make their journey, more pleasant and informative. At the same time, we wanted to provide operators with the capability to configure the look and feel of their Portal on the one hand and the content on the other hand, to tune it to their different demands.”

The growing importance of on-train passenger entertainment portals was highlighted by Icomera’s take-over of on-train content supplier GoMedia, in September of last year.

In November 2020, India’s Central Railway Division announced it was equipping its huge fleet of commuter trains with on-board media portals. The operator said the new service would enable passengers on its fleet of 165 trains to download a selection of pre-loaded TV, film and music content to their devices. The train operator plans to generate revenue via pre-sold advertising spots in the downloaded content.

Meanwhile, Nomad says that its portal will offer a chance for operators to strengthen the links with their passengers, providing greater engagement – hence the name. As a passenger, the supplier argues, the Portal will offer content, ranging from simple static pages, updated as required by the operator, to rich interactive media providing a better customer experience.

The Engage Portal comes in two forms:

Engage Portal Lite – web portal for WiFi access – get online quickly – passengers can start to enjoy onboard WiFi – easily upgradable for more functionality – three customisable designs to choose from.

Full Features Engage Portal –feature-rich – with a wide range of media content such as newspapers, movies, catch up TV, e-books, games, journey information and moving maps – everything you need to enhance customer experience – all enjoyed with digital rights.

On-train WiFi services, trackside wireless networks, the growing market for passenger WiFi and on-board entertainment will be the main subjects of BWCS’ WiFi on Trains Conference on November 16th and 17th this year.
