Nomad is not an Island - as it Moves into the Wider World of Connected Vehicles
(25 May 2021, BWCS Staff)Best-known for its WiFi on Trains offering, Newcastle-based supplier Nomad has announced a new range of “Road Connectivity” products. According to the company the plan is to bring its expertise in the Rail industry to bear on buses, road freight and mining vehicles.
Nomad says that its wide range of applications, such as Passenger Information services, On-Board CCTV, Location Tracking and Condition Monitoring, as well as Passenger WiFi, will all be made be available to help non-rail vehicle operators cut costs and enhance their services. A statement from the company said that it intends to offer a wide range of solutions from essential Passenger WiFi right through to a fully Connected Bus.
The new Nomad Connected Bus is, the company reports, designed to enable transport operators to benefit by being able to better reduce power and hence fuel usage. At the same time, passengers will be able access the Internet on board. In addition, the system offers enhanced safety services such as instant alerts of any critical failures. Incidents are recorded in real-time and can be provided in the form of a dashboard (including past incidents).
The supplier points out that its CCTV monitoring system will come equipped with a virtual “tamper-proof” video evidence locker for added security. New Artificial Intelligence applications will allow automatic alerts to be generated in case an incident is detected. Even, Nomad says, it is working collaboratively to provide the ability to monitor air quality and clean the air during journeys.

Free WiFi access is widely viewed as an important offering for both trains and buses as passenger transport operators struggle to lure commuters back on board. In addition, the availability of passenger WiFi can help spread peak loads as workers can effectively start their day later/leave the office earlier, if they can access e-mails and company files on their journeys to and from the office.
