Deutsche Bahn Boosts On-Board Video Service with Endava

(22 Jun 2021, BWCS Staff)

German train operator Deutsche Bahn has signed up Endava to provide new video-on-demand services on its Intercity Express (ICE) trains. Starting next month, DB passengers will be able to access an improved entertainment offering via the on-board ICE portal.

According to Endava, the pair have collaborated to develop a video-on-demand platform that boasts a wider variety of movies and TV shows. Travellers will now be able to access the content on their own devices when connected to the WiFi networks, Wifi@DB or WIFIonICE, on more than 330 ICE high-speed trains.

The technical solutions company says that the main difference will be an improvement in the user interface, as well as the further development of the extensive cache of film and TV content. By integrating the service into the ICE portal, users will be able to play videos directly in their browser. DB stressed that the new offering will still be free and without the need to log in. Importantly, from the point of view of mobile data charges and connectivity issues, all of the content will be stored on servers on board the trains.

John Cotterell, the CEO of Endava, commented “We are happy that Deutsche Bahn chose us as their video-on-demand partner, and that we will be able to prove our industry experience, cultural match, and technical excellence while staying true to one of our core values - to care for our clients as individuals.”

With Endava's support, the company argues, passengers will gain a wider content offering due to a bigger and more frequently changing film and series selection, which will be available in various languages including subtitles and audio descriptions. The solution involves front-end development and integration into existing portals, back-end streaming, a CMS and encoding, content sourcing and continuous operations, monitoring, analytics, and customer support.

Stefanie Berk, Marketing Director at DB Fernverkehr said “'Come July, we will be able to make the ICE portal even more attractive with Endava's new video-on-demand offering. Our aim is to provide our passengers with an always diverse and enjoyable entertainment service on our trains.”

Deutsche Bahn recently became the highest spending European train operator when it comes to passenger WiFi services. Having invested over €200 million on expanding its technical WiFi infrastructure at stations, on trains and buses in recent years, it said it plans to pour another €44 million into growing the service even further over the coming months.

On-board entertainment services, Track-side connectivity and on-board WiFi provision will be the main subjects of BWCS’s WiFi on Trains Conference later this year.
