New Carriage Antenna Will Boost On-Train WiFi Deployment, says HUBER+SUHNER
(31 May 2022, BWCS Staff)Swiss connectivity components specialist, HUBER+SUHNER has launched a new in-carriage, antenna, which it says will help simplify the deployment of WiFi on trans.
According to H+S, its Rail Active, In Carriage Antenna is an “all-in-one solution that provides enhanced flexibility in mounting locations, offering multiple access points across the carriage ceiling.”
The antenna, which will be marketed as the CYBOX-PA by partners ELTEC Elektronik, does not use RF cabling. H+S claims that this helps improve the system’s performance by maximising space and at the same time reducing weight “significantly”. This, in turn, will clearly help train operators lower their operational costs. At the same time, the supplier says that its new offering will help meet the increasing demand for MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output) antennas.
According to Peter Albert, Managing Director at ELTEC Elektronik, "In order to improve passenger and staff WiFi coverage, rail operators are responding with new technology in and on trains. The combination of the embedded ELTEC access point and the antenna from HUBER+SUHNER in a smart housing, results in a highly integrative solution that seamlessly blends into the interior. Now, multiple access points in the carriage can provide passengers with significantly higher bandwidth and enable them to surf faster with their devices.”
The new system builds on previous ones that had fixed access points to deliver connectivity to passengers. Having the radios embedded directly into the antenna eliminates the need for RF cabling between the access points and antennas, meeting increasing demands for MIMO antennas. According to H+S, this gives operators a more compact option that is easy to install and maximises space inside the train carriage.
Daniel Montagnese, Head of Product Management Antennas at HUBER+SUHNER, said: “As new generations of WiFi are introduced, more antennas and RF cables will be needed. By embedding the access point directly inside the antenna itself, there will be less losses through the RF cables as the distance to the access point is no longer an issue.”
