US Train Operator Signs Nomad and Evo-Rail for Trackside 5G

(18 Jul 2023, BWCS Staff)

UK-based rail tech company evo-rail has been signed up to provide its rail-5G solution to the Caltrain network. The project, on the US West Coast, will see evo-rail partner with Nomad Digital and Alstom, to install a high-speed, high-capacity wireless network alongside the newly electrified line between San José and San Francisco in Northern California.

Simon Holmes, CEO of evo-rail, said: "We're excited to bring our rail-5G solution to Caltrain. This cutting-edge technology will help Caltrain to deliver a safer, more reliable, and efficient rail transportation system for its customers and staff."

Holmes argues that the rail-5G solution will provide passengers with more reliable and faster WiFi service. The system can provide connectivity at speeds of up to 10Gbps, which is significantly higher than the connectivity speeds currently enjoyed on the trains.

Caltrain also plans to use the system to capture real-time data through on-board sensors. This will allow the train operator’s head office to be kept up to speed on track performance and customer movements as well as helping to identify infrastructure problems.

The whole project is expected to be completed in early 2024. Once the installation is finished Caltrain will be one of the first rail operators in the United States to offer rail-5G services.

New WiFi on Train Projects and Trackside Communications will be presented and discussed at this year’s Traincomms Conference, hosted by BWCS in London on the 14th and 15th of November, where Deutsche Bahn, Network Rail, Amtrak, OBB, SJ, TfL and SNCF, amongst others, will all be speaking.
