Mobile operators are losing the battle for the enterprise
(16/12/2003, Ledbury, UK)
Mobile operators are in danger of losing out to solutions providers in the battle to sign up global enterprise customers, according a new report published today by UK wireless analysts BWCS. The report, Overcoming the Barriers to the Wireless Enterprise - How effective are solutions providers?, warns that systems integrators and consultancies are gearing up to fill the space left wide open by the wireless service providers.
Report author Ray Attwood comments, "While mobile operators are preoccupied with stagnating consumer markets and struggling to make headway in the SME space, a huge revenue opportunity in the large enterprise and MNC segment is slipping through their fingers." Frustrated with the inadequate response from their long-standing mobile network providers, enterprise customers are increasingly turning to companies such as IBM, Hewlett Packard and Cap Gemini Ernst and Young to help them devise and implement large-scale wireless solutions.
"Many companies have already started to mobilise their workforce with the provision of mobile phones, pages, PDAs and wireless cards for laptops," Attwood explains. "Now they are beginning to move on from these limited and often departmental initiatives to the next stage, where deployments are planned and rolled out across the entire organisation to improve their business processes. Enterprise customers simply don't have the confidence that their operators can handle projects of such complexity and scale."
One of the main barriers to growth in the wireless enterprise sector has been confusion in the market about the kind of solutions that are available and how they can deliver quantifiable benefits and ROIs. Enterprise customers know they want a wireless solution, but are unclear about exactly what such a solution will do and what is involved. "Until operators get better at plaining to customers how a wireless solution will improve competitive advantage and efficiency within their organisation, they will fail to keep up with consultancies and solutions providers in this highly lucrative market," says Attwood.

About Overcoming the Barriers to the Wireless Enterprise
Problems with immature technologies plus the global slump in the technology sector have been blamed for the slow growth of large-scale wireless enterprise deployments. But this is only half the story. In this extensive new report, BWCS identifies the major business and technical issues which have held back wireless implementations in the corporate sector and examines the crucial role of systems integrators and solutions providers in the value chain. In ten in-depth profiles, it analyses the wireless enterprise strategies of major solutions providers, their respective strengths, the experience gained from past and current projects and the resources they have dedicated to wireless enterprise solutions.
