(16 Jun 2008, BWCS Staff)

As expected, search engine giant Google has taken an early lead in the mobile internet search provider market. According to figures released by Nielsen Mobile Research, the Mountain View California company claimed 61% of mobile search users during the three months to the end of March this year. The next in line after Google in the mobile search engine stakes was Yahoo! which accounted for 18% of all mobile searches carried out during the period.

However, Google searchers have used the search facility only around nine times each per month and this is the highest number of uses among all mobile search engines. Yahoo! users searched only an average of 6.7 times per month. The information category leads the mobile internet search categories having been visited by 33% of Google and Yahoo mobile searchers, says Nielsen. The local listings category was visited by 29% of Google mobile searchers and by 24% of Yahoo! mobile searchers.
