New WiMax operations have been launched in Saudi Arabia and Russia, various papers report today. The new WiMax network in St Petersburg and Moscow has been launched by Russian telco Scartel using Samsung equipment. The Saudi operation is controlled by national mobile operator Mobily which recently purchased data services provider Bayanat - owner of a WiMax licence.

The Russian network covers over 20 million people in the two major cities and surrounding areas. Scartel says it will operate fast wireless data services using frequencies in the 2.5GHz to 2.7GHz range. The network has a total of 1,600 base stations and the operator says it plans to increase coverage to other cities within a few years.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabian mobile operator Mobily says it is offering WiMax services to residential customers with download speeds of up to 2Mbps and free installation. The Mobily service is initially available only in the major cities of Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, and Khobar, though it plans to cover the entire Kingdom. The service is called broadband @ home and uses pre-paid technology for payment.
