Orange wins Austrian Licence

(02 Oct 2008, BWCS Staff)

Austrian telecoms regulator, the TKK, has sold off the new national 900MHz GSM licence to Orange Austria. The franchise includes two 0.8MHz packages in the 914MHz - 915 MHz and 959MHz - 960 MHz range. According the TKK, Orange Austria was the highest bidder - offering euros0.5 million for the licence, outbidding Barablu Mobil Austria and T-Mobile Austria. The licence is valid until 31 December 2017 and the frequencies should help the operator mainly in improving its indoor coverage.

Orange Austria is the recently rebranded incarnation of mobile operator ONE, owned by Mid Europa Partners (65%) and France Telecom (35%). The company announced its name change last month and it is currently the third largest mobile operator in Austria with two million customers and a market share close to 20%.

According to local press reports, mobile broadband in Austria has proved such a success that former monopoly operator Telekom Austria fears that its mobile internet service is beginning to cannibalize its own fixed line offering.
