Bidding to Open in Hong Kong

In Hong Kong, the Office of the Telecommunications Authority (OFTA) has declared that five companies have been shortlisted as qualified bidders for Hong Kong's Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) licenses. The five companies are China Mobile Hong Kong, CSL Ltd, Genius Brand Ltd, Hong Kong Broadband Network Ltd and SmarTone Wireless Ltd.

Genius Brand is still part-owned by PCCW and Hutchison Telecommunications, while SmarTone Wireless is partly owned by City Telecom and SmarTone Telecommunications Holdings.

Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) is a radio access technology that can support a variety of wide area high-speed wireless data services. According to OFTA, the winning bidders will be allowed to provide fixed, mobile voice or data services or a combination of these services in the city. The telecoms authority said the bidding is due to begin in one week's time on January 12th.
