Virgin to Launch WiFi on its Trains

(06 Jan 2009, BWCS Staff)

Virgin Trains is set to finally launch on-board WiFi services in mid-February of this year. According to the travel company, by that date, all 52 of its Pendolino trains and half of its 21 Super Voyager trains will be fitted out to offer passengers WiFi connections. Virgin has been working with Nomad Digital to install the service and already offers WiFi connections at its business lounges at many stations.

According to a train company spokesman, quoted on businesstravelworld.com, the service is likely to be free for Virgin's first class passengers, though standard class passenger will be charged a fee. However, Virgin has yet to make a final decision on the pricing structure. Nomad Digital also provides passenger WiFi services on the Heathrow Express where passengers are charged at standard T-Mobile hotspot rates of 60 minutes for £5 or 24 hours for £10.

The UK is fast becoming the most go-ahead market for WiFi on train services, with East Coast main line operator National Express and its partner Icomera offering on-board connections for free to all of its passengers. The East Coast service has been up and running since GNER and Icomera introduced WiFi on trains in 2003.

BWCS will again host its annual WiFi on Trains conference in June in central London, for further information please contact Ross Parsons ([email protected] ).
