Huawei to Deliver Android Phone

(08 Apr 2009, BWCS Staff)

Chinese telecoms equipment and mobile handset maker Huawei has confirmed that it will release an Android wireless device later this year. The phone, which will be sold exclusively by T-Mobile International, will only be available in Europe to begin with. The company would not comment on when or if the phones would go on sale in the US.

The major mobile phone makers - Nokia, LG and Samsung, are all known to be working on their own handsets based on Google's Android operating system. Samsung had been expected to launch an Android-based phone at the mobile industry's recent get-together in Barcelona, but executives have conceded that the phone will be delayed until later in the year.

A statement from the Chinese manufacturer said the company could confirm that "Huawei will be releasing the third Google phone on T-Mobile this year." Despite some reports indicating that the phone would be ready by the third quarter the company would not confirm this. The handset, which Huawei showed off but did not actually show in use, at the Barcelona Congress in February, is said to boast a touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera, 3.5mm headset jack and WiFi connectivity.

According to the reports, T-Mobile will aim the Huawei phone at the lower cost end of the market. However, the company has yet to confirm that will be the case. The device will most likely launch in the UK in August or September after the launch of the HTC Magic Android based phone, expected next month.
