DoCoMo to Push Ahead with LTE

(13 Jul 2009, BWCS Staff)

NTT DoCoMo has announced it will stick to its plans to introduce a fourth-generation mobile-phone network next year, in spite of some delays by other mobile phone companies in this area. According to a report in the Financial Times this morning, which is based on an interview conducted with the head of the giant Japanese mobile company, Ryuji Yamada, the company wants to be "in the leading group in this technology".

The LTE, or fourth generation mobile phone, standard is set to greatly increase data download speeds for mobile phones. In addition, it will enable Japanese phones to be compatible with the rest of the world for the first time, the FT said. Yamada said his company is confident the LTE technology will be compatible with other systems thanks to the work that has been done already on standards.

In April of this year, two Swedish mobile operators said they would join forces to build and operate a 4G network to cover Sweden with advanced mobile broadband services. According to the partners, Telenor Sweden and Tele2 Sweden, the system will offer download speeds of up to 150Mbps in urban areas and 80Mbps in the countryside. The network is expected to have some services up and running next year.

The two companies said they have formed a joint venture to oversee and fund the roll out. Work is expected to start later this year and the first city-wide services should go into operation by the end of 2010. The 4G network will be based on LTE technology and includes an extension of the current GSM network.
