Chinese Companies Win Chinese Contracts

(14 Jul 2009, BWCS Staff)

China Mobile has announced the end of the third phase of bidding for its TD-SCDMA equipment contracts. Perhaps not surprisingly, local companies dominate the competition to supply the kit, which is based on the home-grown Chinese 3G standard. The third-phase bidding, which began in March of this year, covers network equipment to be installed in over 200 Chinese cities.

The major winner appears to be Chinese vendor ZTE, which garnered 34% of the market.  Huawei reaped 22% and Datang Mobile 16%, which meant that between them the big three Chinese manufacturers took 72% of the contracts. The remaining five companies, including Ericsson, FiberHome, New Postcom, Nokia Siemens Networks and Potevio, gained market shares of 5% to 6% each. The new equipment includes 39,000 base stations. The completion of this phase will see the TD-SCDMA network cover around 70% of China.

At the end of 2008, a consortium led by Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell and Datang Mobile won the major part of the contract for supplying the kit for China Mobile's second phase TD-SCDMA network trial.
