America to Offer Ovi

(03 Sep 2009, BWCS Staff)

Mexican mobile operator America Movil has signed up with Finnish handset maker Nokia to make the online application store - the Ovi Store - available across South America. According to the cellular company, America Movil's customers will be able to download and purchase new applications, ring-tones, games and videos from the Nokia developed Ovi Store. The service will be launched later this year on the Nokia N97 phone.

Ovi is seen by most analysts as Nokia's attempt to match Apple and its successful online application store. Nokia said at the launch of Ovi, earlier this year, that its new shop will target 50 million mobile phone users who will be able to buy and download new apps online. The company said that owners of up to 50 of its devices would be able to use the site.

So far, the store is available to users in Singapore and Australia with other countries being added on a piece-meal basis. AT&T plans to make the Ovi Store available to its customers in the United States later this year.
