Orange (Finally) Sets Date

(02 Nov 2009, BWCS Staff)

The first of the operators in the UK to start offering iPhones in competition to O2, has finally announced a launch date. From 10th of November, Orange will offer all of its customers the iconic Apple handset, thereby becoming the first company to break O2's monopoly since the phones first made it to these shores two years ago. In a clear bid to make headway against its rivals, Orange said the phone will be made available for free to those willing to sign up to a two year deal.

Clearly keen to make the most of the first day of sales, the French-owned mobile operator said that many of its 400 retail stores will open early on the launch day. Users will also be able to buy online, at Apple shops, Carphone Warehouse, Phones4U and other high street retailers.

A breathless Tom Alexander, Orange UK's CEO, gushed "The excitement for the iPhone is immense. Since we announced the iPhone on Orange we have already seen more than a quarter of a million customers register their interest on our website."

Orange customers will be able to get hold of the iPhone 3GS for free by signing up to a £45-a-month, two-year contract, while those keen to own an iPhone 3G can get a similar deal for just £30 per month. Fellow UK operator Vodafone is also in line to start selling the iPhone but has yet to announce any specific launch dates.
